Three years ago, I watched people I love struggle with stress and anxiety. Friends burnt out from work. Family members dealing with chronic health issues. Everyone searching for answers in apps that promised to "optimize" them but never delivered real results.

So I built VagalSync—a wellness app that actually worked. It didn't just track your heart rate or tell you to "breathe more." It understood your vagal tone, your body's stress response system, and gave you personalized interventions that moved the needle. Cold exposure protocols. Breathwork sequences. Biomarker tracking. Real science, real results. People started getting better.

But then I saw the other side of the problem. The providers—doctors, nurses, wellness practitioners—were drowning in paperwork, insurance bureaucracy, and fragmented systems. They wanted to help people like VagalSync was helping, but they had no infrastructure. So I built ProfessionalFi, a practice management platform that let providers actually focus on patient care instead of administrative hell. They could access protocol libraries, manage billing, coordinate care—all in one place.

Two companies. Two solutions. Both working. Both growing.

And then I saw the missing piece.

VagalSync was collecting wellness data—heart rate variability, sleep patterns, stress biomarkers. ProfessionalFi was managing patient health records—lab results, diagnoses, treatment plans. Both platforms needed to connect to actually deliver on their promise. But when I started building that connection, I hit a wall.

The data wasn't sovereign.

Every solution I looked at—cloud storage, HIPAA-compliant databases, third-party APIs—required users to trust someone with their data. Trust the company. Trust the encryption. Trust the promises. But here's what I realized: trust is not a security model.

I started digging deeper. Turns out, your body generates about $273 of data value every day. Your heart rate when you're stressed. Your sleep quality after that late-night argument. Your location patterns when you visit doctors. All of it is collected, aggregated, and sold—by health apps, insurance companies, data brokers, Big Tech.

Here's the moment it clicked for me: I was debugging a data sync issue between VagalSync and a user's Oura ring. I realized that to make it work seamlessly, I needed access to both their Oura data AND their VagalSync data. I could see everything. Their sleep, their heart rate, their stress patterns, their location when they exercised. Everything.

And I thought: "If I were a bad actor, I could sell this data for thousands of dollars. And the user would never know."

That kept me up at night. Not because I was going to do it—I wasn't. But because every other health app founder has this same access. And statistically, some of them will exploit it. Some already are.

That's when I realized: we need a better model. Not "trust me, I'm a good founder." But "I physically can't access your data even if I wanted to."

And here's the kicker: even the "good guys"—apps like VagalSync that genuinely want to help—were part of the problem. Because the infrastructure itself was broken. No matter how good our intentions, we were still asking users to give up their data and just trust us to protect it.
